Belt Grinders
Belt grinding is a machining method to process metals and other materials, with the aid of coated abrasives. The basic difference between belt grinders and belt sanders is the material being machined.
Belt grinding is a versatile process that is suitable for all kinds of different applications. The three different applications of the belt grinding are:
- Finishing: surface roughness, removal of micro burrs, cosmetic finishes, polishing
- Deburring: radiusing, burr removal, edge breaking
- Stock removal: high stock removal, cleaning (e.g. of corrosion), eliminating mill or tool marks, dimensioning

Belt grinder safety precautions
Follow these safety guidelines when working with grinders:
- Always unplug your belt grinder before changing parts or performing maintenance
- Safety glasses and shields are a must at all times to protect eyes from serious injuries
- Wearing face masks protect the lungs from dust and particles while grinding
- Never operate the belt grinder while wearing loose clothing
- Never wear gloves when operating the drill press and use a vice to hold pieces to be cut
- Ensure that no combustible or flammable materials are nearby that could be ignited by sparks from the grinder wheel.
- Ensure that a guard covers at least 270 degrees of the grinding wheel on bench-mounted machines.
- Allow the grinder to reach full speed before stepping into the grinding position as faulty wheels will normally break at the start of an operation.
- Unless otherwise designed, grind on the face of the wheel.
- Slowly move workpieces across the face of wheel in a uniform manner. This will keep the wheel sound.
- Periodically check grinder wheels for soundness. Suspend the wheel on a string and tap it. If the wheel rings, it is probably sound.
- Replace wheels that are badly worn or cracked immediately
- Never use a wheel that has been dropped or received a heavy blow, even if there is no apparent damage.
- Before using a new wheel, let it run a few seconds at full speed to ensure that it is balanced.
